Project Description

In coordination with Amtrak, Jacobs Engineering, and Kemp Brothers Company, the project required installation of a 58,000 SF Progressive Maintenance Facility (PMF) located in the Los Angeles, CA Amtrak Rail Yard. The PMF is made up of 8 service bays, 120 feet long each. A track and service trench runs through the building to allow for trains cars to pass through. The bays consist of 2 open-air Inbound Bays for staging and preparation of cars to be serviced, 5 Service Bays (or “Spots”) where most of the servicing is done, and a 1 outbound bay which allows for last-moment staging and servicing. At one bay there is a second story which contains an air-conditioned Health and Welfare Space which contains locker rooms, offices, cafeteria, and meeting space. The building is open on the sides except for the Health and Welfare portions of the building, which are enclosed on the sides with insulated metal paneling. The entire building has a metal roof. A generator will provide back up power to the facility. Associated with the building itself is excavation & grading, construction of new tracks & turnouts, removal, relocation and/or realignment of existing track and turnouts, and site work.

Scope of Work

As a subcontractor to Kemp Brothers Company, JA Placek Construction Company constructed 2,800TF of new ballasted tracks with wood ties & pandrol fastening system, install 1,400TF of CWR over steel pedestals with rail clips within the new PMF building, construct two (2) New No.8 Turnouts with wood ties, remove & relocate four (4) No.8 Turnouts, install one (1) single point derail, install two (2) solar machine operated sliding derails with blue flags, bumping posts, shift, realign, and resurface approximately 1,400TF of yard tracks.

Project Description

In coordination with UPRR, construct Double Shoofly Track for construction of new bridge for UPRR Mainline Tracks. As a Subcontractor to Sully-Miller Contracting, JA Placek Construction Co. was responsible for installation & removal of Shoofly Tracks.

Scope of Work

Construct approximately 3,000TF (track-feet) of Double Shoofly Tracks and one (1EA) Power Operated #15 Turnout with 136# CWR and Wood Ties. After completion of new bridge and new Mainline Tracks, remove and dispose 3,000TF of Shoofly Track.
