Project Type

Completion Date

Location

Project Description

BNSF Railway Company celebrated the grand opening of the Logistics Center-Fontana (LCF) on May 9, 2006, featuring new construction of over 17,000 track feet by J.A. Placek in partnership with Kemp Bros Construction Inc. J.A. Placek also performed work to install new turnouts and a new grade crossing on the project.

LCF was built to meet the ever-increasing demand for warehouse and shipping services. The center boasts a 38-acre transload operation (transfer of product from carload rail to truck or truck to carload rail) that provides shippers with transload services for all types of commodities, from building materials and manufactured products to bulk materials.

The project construction included:

  • 36 acres of paved, fenced, well-lit storage area
  • 18 acres dedicated to transload and short-term storage of lumber/dimensional products
  • 3 center beam car spots 9 boxcar spots
  • 50,000 square feet of storage space
  • Truck scale and truck parking
  • Customer inventory management systems
  • Security

Located near other existing rail-served facilities and on a dedicated spur with direct access to the BNSF main rail line, LCF enables BNSF to improve the gathering and distribution process within its carload network to provide more consistent service, and allows customers to quickly react to market demands.

LCF began handling carloads on a limited scale in late November 2005 as the first phases of the facility were completed and is now fully operational with sufficient capacity to handle up to 15,000 rail carloads per year.
